While planning the way to recruit more wargamers into the Historical Wargaming side, I came up with an idea to uniform a single set of rules for both Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Warhammer Historical Battle so that there will be no need for the Warhammer Fantasy Battle players to learn and read any additional materials except the army list to play a historical battle using the existing version (7th Edition?) of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle rules but not the current Warhammer Historical Battle rulebook which was based on the 5th Edition? WFB rulebook. I call this approach to bridge the gap between WFB and WHB, the "Warhammer Open System". I hope by introducing this new concept, the following objectives can be achieved:
(1) we can use any Warhammer Historical Army to fight any Warhammer Fantasy Army, thus increasing the varieties of the armies that can be used in playing WFB and WHB;
(2) making use of the Chinese translation of the WFB 7th Edition from the Taiwan Wargamers to play Warhammer Historical Battle;
(3) provide an immediate path of conversion for the Warhammer Fantasy Battle player to try the Historical Wargamming without any need to read new rules.
(4) providing an immediate path of conversion for the Historical Wargamer to try Warhammer Fantasy Battle without any need to read new rules. They can also use their existing Historical Army to fight against any Warhammer Fatasy Battle, thus totally eminating the need to build any new army to play WFB initially. Of course, they will play WFB and build new fantasy armies if they like WFB.
(5) Bridge the generation gap between father and son. For example, the father may have a 20mm or 28mm Historical Early Imperial Roman painted years ago and the son may have a WFB Daemon Army 28mm Army. They can now play against each other without any need to read any new rules.
The project involves providing new pts values and streamlining some of the rules of the published WHB army books. Will keep you posted on my progress. Of course, you have to buy the Warhammer Historical Army Books and have a copy of the WFB 7th Edition rulebook to try this concept.

I always believe simple is beauty. The characters, special choice and rare choice of the Warhammer Fantasy Battles are too powerful. Magic phase takes too long and magic is too powerful. Stubborn units when combining with reroll rules are too powerful. The combination of the above makes it usual for gamers to manipulate the system to create cheesy and super army list.
Therefore, my first effort is to place limiation on them.
The maximum power dices and dispel dices for a Warhammer Open System game is 4, only 2 magics can be casted per turn from the magic users and bound items possessed by an army. Maximum rare choice is 1, maximum special choice are 2. In addition, the maximum total of the special choice and the rare choice are 2. The General can choose magic items or other special powers whatsoever described up to a total of 25 points. Other characters can choose magic items or other special powers whatsoever described up to a total of 10 points. All champions cannot choose any magic items or other other special powers whatsoever described. Army standard and unit standard cannot be magical or possess any special powers no mater how they are described. Special characters cannot be used. Monster cannot be used. The maximum number of flyers or flying units is 1.
For troops with stubborn special ability, they cannot use their stubborn ability on any reroll of breaktest and if you choose to rely on the stubborn ability and you roll a 9 or more, it is a failed break test unless you will pass the break test by rolling that dice number if you do not use the stubborn special ability.

Hi Lawrence, Doesn't seems I would give up warhammer for warhammer historical yet, although I think warhammer historical is a great potential to explore in my future war gaming. Easter holidays are coming, just drop by FA this Saturday. Many gamers including me would like a game with you. You can try my dark elves or beastmens, your choice.

I know of your pain Lorricount. A few of us are trying to setup a tournament where themed armies, sportsmanship, and good painting wins awards while there are harsh penalities for cheesy armies.

Hi John, Hanani, Pollux, Terence, Simons, ... and other old acquiantance of WFB players at FA,
Long time no see! I have been playing board wargames since I show up at FA last year. I still maintain a locker and have my armies kept there ready for action. I am still waiting for the revamp of army books before I am keen to play WFB again. There are simply too many alternatives and distractions nowadays. i.e. Card-driven board wargames, multiplayer board wargames, Advanced Squad Leader, .....
Of course, I long to meet you guys again at the battlefield at FA and will show up on 17/4/2010 if you have time, subject to confirmation by yourself and/or other players who wanted to meet me at FA.
For 3/4/2010 (this Saturday), I have already agreed with 4 boardgamers to play at My Wargames Room and cannot come to FA on that day. For this holiday, I have 2 days quota and they have already been allotted to my Board Wargaming friends. I tried to ask my wife for another, but permission not granted.
Kindly let me know your decision so that I can make preparation and arrangement before hand.
Visitors of the forum who browse the HKSW folder will also know that I am busy in assisting the organisation of 8 tournaments for the Society this year. We have a double room at HITEC now and can accomodate more members and players though as said before, I would rather play WFB at FA than at HKSW.
